Testimony by Shawn Jung
Spoken at the UVic Multifaith AGM on April 29, 2025

Hi everyone, glad to be here. My name is Shawn, and I’m a student at UVic studying linguistics—or I should say, was a linguistics student. I suppose I’m an alumnus now. And it would be no exaggeration to say that I owe a good part of my graduation to the community here at Multifaith.

Over the last two years, I’ve been part of the Belonging Dinner, organized by Min-Goo and Irena, and supported by the kindness of everyone here. These dinners have been an incredible blessing in my life. They’ve introduced me to amazing cultures, opened doors to new friendships, offered rest from the wicked evil known as exam season, and, of course, provided warm, delicious food at a table that welcomes everyone.

If I had to describe Belonging Dinners in one word, it would be nourishment. The meals nourish the body with good, genuine food that gives you the strength to face the day. More than that, Belonging Dinners nourish the heart, as you share joy with people so willing to share themselves through food. And to me, Belonging Dinners nourish the spirit, as I have found in this place a true image of love and community, of joy and belonging.

I’d like to give my heartfelt thanks to everyone who helped make Belonging Dinners happen, and to everyone at Multifaith who forms the foundation for these programs. I am so very grateful to have known—and to continue knowing—this special pocket of Victoria.

Shawn is an recent alumni of the applied linguistics program, whose research has focused on Korean linguistics and the use of digital tools for second language instruction. He is a member of the linguistics course union, the Underlings, where he served as merch and event coordinator. He is a 2nd generation Korean-Canadian with a passion for cooking, and has 6 years of experience in professional kitchen.

At night, Shawn wonders where the big ball of fire in the sky disappears to. He does not know and this scares him"

Belonging Dinner x Writing Home Open Mic

In November, Campus United UVic celebrated the semester’s end with a crossover event between our two programs: Belonging Dinner x Writing Home Open Mic! Our evening began with cooking Zimbabwean stew and sadza, led by Thembelihle Moyo. Dinner was followed by a candle-lit open mic, where ten students shared their creative writing and music. Students engaged creatively with the program, including bracelet-making, painting, and playing instruments. The open mic was inclusive, with several students sharing it was their first time performing for an audience. We were joined by thirty student participants and look forward to another open mic next semester!

connecting with God

Pause in your scrolling and take a moment to rest as Aaron reads from Psalm 1. Take a moment to connect with God as Aaron reads an excerpt from Psalm 63. If you enjoyed this video, join us this Tuesday in Aaron’s office for our weekly Quiet Worship - 6015 Walter Gage Road, Room 125.

Psalm 1 describes the foundation of the Christian life. Beginning with verse 1, there is a progression from following to sitting in stagnation. Yet farther along, the psalmist speaks of those who follow God and meditate on God’s word. They lead a joyful life, like fruitful trees by streams of water.

Consider the distinction between simply sitting and being planted. What are you sitting on that you’d like to change? How can you be planted in God today?
